Day 26 - Praying For Obedience To Authority

Sovereign Lord,

Teach us to be obedient to You and all other authority You place before us.  Help us to understand that in Your eyes our obedience is better than any sacrifice we could make, any other thing we could do for You.  (1 Samuel 15:22,23)   As much as we often don’t like them, we thank You that You have placed authorities in our life to govern us.  May we have faith that there is no authority except that which You have established.  May we believe that the authorities that exist have been established by God.  (Romans 13:1-6)

Help us to believe that the reason You ask for obedience to discipline is because You love us.  (Proverbs 3:11,12)  Therefore may we not make light of discipline, and may we not lose heart when we our rebuked, believing that You O Lord discipline those You love.  (Hebrews 12:5,6)

Help us to be obedient in the many roles in life we play.  As children, may we obey our parents in everything, knowing that this pleases You.  (Colossians 3:18-25)  May we fulfill the commandment to honor our fathers and mothers so that we may enjoy long life on the earth.  (Deuteronomy 5:16 / Ephesians 6:1-3)  Help us to also obey other earthly masters - such as bosses, coaches, teachers, government, etc. - in everything.  And may we do it not only when their eye is on us and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.  Whatever we do, may we work at it will all our heart, as working for You, assured that it is Christ Jesus we are serving.  (Colossians 3:18-25)

Help us to remember that even though it may be difficult to obey, that You have promised rewards for doing so.  If we are faithful to obey the commands You give us - to love the Lord our God and to serve him with all our heart and with all our soul - then You will send rain on our land in its season, both autumn and spring rains and we will eat and be satisfied.  (Deuteronomy 11:13-15)  If we look intently into Your law and do not forget what we have heard, but proceed to do it.  You will bless us in what we do.  (James 1:25)  For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in Your sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.  (Romans 2:13)
