The Mysterious Growing Daffodil

The Mysterious

I was walking to the mailbox this week when I noticed from the side of my eye something unexpected.  It was a lone daffodil, shining brightly in the midst of the barren azaleas getting ready to bloom.

What was so surprising was that I had not planted this daffodil.  For those who know me well, I am far from what you would call a green thumb, so I know I have never planted any daffodils (as much as I love all those around the neighborhood!).  But we have lived in our home over 20 years and to the best of my knowledge, no one has ever planted any daffodils.  So how did this Mysterious, Growing Daffodil come to be in our yard?

I spent the day pondering this, joyful that I had this lone bloom without having made any effort of my own, and because it reminded me of the new birth of Spring; but curious as to how this bloom came to be here.  And as I pondered, the greatest of encouragements hit me.

God’s work is Mysterious & Gradual.

Matthew 6:28 says to look at the lilies of the field and see how they grow without ever laboring.  Mark 4:26-27 says, "This is what the kingdom of God is like.  A man scatters seed on the ground.  Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.”

Mysterious and Gradual

That is how God works.  What an encouragement and great reminder to me and hopefully to you, if you are seeking some type of growth and feel like it is not happening the way you want, that God is at work in ways you can not understand nor see!

It is if that lone daffodil said to me, “You will grow my child, you will grow.  Stop your anxiety about it happening.  The seed must be laid down and it will take time, but though you know not how, it will grow.  Be patient.  Believe in the seeds planted in you.  God is the one at work.  Who can fathom His ways?”

If you are experiencing any desire for growth, be it in your own life, a family member’s, a relationship, a work situation, trust that God is at work in mysterious ways to bring something out of that which should be nothing.  If He can cause a daffodil to grow where it was not planted, He can bring forth something miraculous in your life as well.

Be patient for your harvest, and may this mysterious growing daffodil be your reminder of the glory that is to come!
