"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.  Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.  . . . Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, 'What does this mean?'"  Acts 2

Sunday, June 8, is Pentecost Sunday.  Pentecost Sunday is a holy day in the church as it is the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the church.  Because of this it is sometimes referred to as the "Birthday of the Church."

The name Pentecost is derived from the Greek word "pentekoste" which means "fifty".  It is called Pentecost because this holy day comes 50 days after Easter.  It is also referred to in English culture as "WhitSunday" or White Sunday because this became a day where many were baptized wearing white garments for their baptismal ceremonies.

In Luke 24:46-49, Jesus, after his death and resurrection, spoke to His disciples saying, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

This "power from on high", that Jesus spoke of was the descending of the Holy Spirit, in wind and fire.  It is what gave those disciples, and all followers of Jesus after them, the power to live a Christian life, a task impossible to do on our own without Christ's power from above.

Here's a 2 minute uplifting video about Pentecost and why the celebration of this day matters to all Christians.

Be excited and thankful to celebrate at church this Sunday!
