Taking Your Medicine

“If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord who heals you.”  Exodus 15:26

Take Your Medicine

Have you ever . . . tried to get an unwilling child to take some medicine?

“Just try it, you’ll like it.”  Or, “This is really good for you, it will make you feel better,” are flippant comments we use to convince our children to swallow the medicine.  But try as we may, no amount of pleading, bribing or even yelling will get an unwilling child to take unwanted medicine!

I can remember the days of trying to get my children to take some medicine when they had really high fevers.  They would be burning up and miserable, looking so pitiful my heart would break, and yet as I would bring out the medicine, the tears would start to flow uncontrollably.  They would grab their mouth and scream, “NO!” and I of course would feel like the terrible, horrible, mean mommy.

But there was one truth that I knew - to get rid of the fever meant to take the medicine.  And as I would force them to take it, I could completely understand how hard and unpleasant it must be for God to have to force us to swallow our medicine too.

What do I mean by our medicine?  It is what God brings out of the cabinet to insure our health.  It is His remedy to make us well, whether that is following certain behaviors to avoid problems, or making changes from other, more destructive behaviors that have already caused physical, emotional, or spiritual disease.

His medicine is the commands and decrees set forth in His Word which offer the promises of blessings and health.

Yet, promising as those blessings of health may be, I often have the same images of shutting my mouth, screaming  No!", and opting to run down the path of illness rather than go through the agony of taking that “yucky” stuff He offers.

I felt compelled to share this today because I have fallen on the way of not listening to God’s voice in regards to healthy living, and consequently through poor choices, I have had a week of feeling VERY under the weather.  Not listening to His Voice of when to go to sleep, choosing my own desires for “rot got foods over wiser choices, stirring over issues when I should have given them over to God, have caused some repercussions.

And now I am forced to take “my medicine, to change some behaviors so that I can receive the abundant life that He has  promised.

How about you?  Is there a certain “medicine” you know God wants to give you?  Are you acting like a child holding your mouth and screaming, “No!  Don’t make me!”  Before you fight Him any longer, imagine the relief you have when your child finally swallows his medicine.  Think of the peaceful healing and rest that begins in their bodies; and then think of yourself as the child He yearns to see healed.

God would never give you medicine if you did not need it.  He would never give you an unnecessary dose of “medicine  anymore than you would give a child cough medicine when he was perfectly healthy.  God only wants to heal us.

So take heed for this crazy month of “May Madness and listen to Gods constant, present voice prescribing the perfect “medicine, to live a peace filled, joy filled, abundant healthy life!   You know you will feel the best when you finally take His dose!"
